BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – A nationwide blood drive will be held Friday, July 11 to raise awareness about the ban on blood donations from gay males.

Student activists, the American Red Cross of the Heartland and the Prairie Pride Coalition are coordinating a blood drive in Bloomington from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at the Eastland Mall in front of the J.C. Penney entrance.

The event is open to the public and donations will be accepted from eligable ally donors.

Organizers are also using the event to raise awareness of the FDA policy that bans most gay and bisexual men from donating blood.
