GALESBURG, Ill. – Jury deliberations are underway in the murder trial of Kai Lefler.
Lefler, 25, of Oneida is accused of stabbing Robert Kilgore, 23, of Galesburg to death in January after witnesses say he confronted Lefler over a possible car burglary.
Lefler was the only witness for the defense. He took the stand Friday in his own defense. He told jurors he “didn’t expect anything like this to happen”.
He described the events leading up to the stabbing. He said he felt sick after drinking and walked outside and leaned on a car before he was “jumped” by Robert Kilgore.
Lefler claimed he was not trying to enter the car at the time of the incident and cut Kilgore with the box cutter he had in his pocket to defend himself.
Jury deliberation began just after 4 p.m. Friday. The judge in the case said he expects a verdict Friday night.
