PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria Notre Dame varsity swimmer Charlie Cain, 17, will be honored at the Heartland Heroes ceremony next month for saving the life of a teammate.

In February, the swim team was working on how long they could hold their breath and how many yards they could swim while doing it.

Swimmer Alex Bousky, 16, pushed himself too far, passed out and suffered a seizure at the bottom of the pool. Cain sprang into action jumping in the water and carrying his teammate to safety, using a maneuver he learned in an American Red Cross training program.

Cain's actions earned him a Certificate of Merit from the Red Cross. He will be honored, along with five other individuals, at the Heartland Heroes ceremony on May 4 at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria.
