NIIGATA, JAPAN -- It may not be an Olympic sport yet, but husband-throwing has been going on for hundreds of years in Japan.

No actual husbands were injured in the making of this video. In Japan's central prefecture of Niigata, the custom of husband throwing is practiced every year on January 15th. It supposedly started as retaliation by men against outsiders who married local girls.

three newly-weds took part in this year's event. the kimono-clad husbands were carried to the top of a hill and thrown one by one into about six-feet of snow.

the husbands rolled down the slope to their waiting wives.
