PEORIA, Ill. -- South Side Mission had a record-setting Christmas. 2,800 holiday meals are in the hands of those in need all over Central Illinois. That is the most it has ever given on any holiday.

More than 500 volunteers spent their Christmas packaging and delivering the meals. Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans and pumpkin pie are all ingredients to this holiday treat and record-breaking distribution.

"It shows how many people we are influencing and how much impact we have on the area around us. So it's pretty awesome," said volunteer Jonathan Yates.

"You have to be organized. We have five shifts of deliveries going out today, and we also have a pool of volunteers who are packaging the meals," said executive director Phil Newton. "It's really a family-like event. "

The meals were delivered from Farmington to Goodfield and many places in between. South Side Mission hopes that next year will be even bigger.
