CHILLICOTHE, Ill. --Multiple area fire departments are still working at this hour to contain a large boat fire in Chillicothe.
Officials say crews were attempting to salvage metal from a tug boat, which had not been used in 15 years, when the fire started. They believe it was started by a spark from the crews’ equipment.
The fire fully engulfed the tug boat and spread to a nearby boat.
Firefighters say the fire is still burning in a lower part of the boat that they do not have access to.
There are no known injuries at this time. A full investigation will be conducted one the fire in out.
"The danger I think for the men, is the fact the structure being cut up. So we are going to do everything we can not to put then in anymore danger," said Chillicothe Fire Chief John Myers.
Officials did say they do not believe the fire has harmed the environment.
There is no estimate on when the blaze will be contained.
