PEORIA, Ill. -- Drivers may soon have to pay more money to park on the streets in downtown Peoria. But using the parking decks may become cheaper.

Tuesday night, the Peoria City council received a parking fee proposal.

If passed, parking-deck rates would be lowered by 50 cents an hour.

Metered parking would increase to $1 per hour.

City Manager Patrick Urich hopes the change will make on-street parking more short-term.

At-Large Councilwoman Beth Jensen said the proposal is inconsistent with the city's goal to become more pedestrian-friendly.

"It is much easier for people to come and park on the streets than it is for them to go into a parking garage," said Jensen. "I am questioning whether this will help move us in that direction."

The proposal will be voted on in January.

If approved, the change will go into effect on February 1st.
