PEKIN, Ill. – Pekin Police are reminding drivers to watch out for pedestrians at the entrance to Coal Miners Park.

The intersection is equipped with a special HAWK signal to make the area safer for pedestrians.

A 15-year-old Pekin High School student was hit and injured while crossing the street in that area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police responded to Parkway and Stadium Drive just before 3 p.m. They say the teen waited for the signal and was crossing the street when an elderly driver ran the red light and hit her.

The teen suffered head injuries and was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She is expected to be released from the hospital on Wednesday.

The driver, Mary Andrews, was ticketed for disobeying a traffic control device.
