PEKIN, Ill. -- Pekin's Salvation Army is celebrating 125 years of service to the community with its annual 5k fundraiser.
The money made here will go to the organization's youth programming. For more than a hundred years, this organization has helped hundreds of thousands of people through its homeless shelter, donations, relief efforts and more.
"Hundreds of people have gone through that shelter, so not only just affecting the lives of the people in that shelter, but we've also helped people throughout the community like after disasters like the tornado," said representative and 5k organizer Matt Deverman. "The Salvation Army is out there on the streets handing out food and water for people in need as well as child care programs here at this center."
The Pekin Salvation Army is one of the first organizations to open--just 25 years after the national organization.
