PEKIN, Ill. -- A jail inmate punched a doctor and nurse in the face and pushed another nurse to the ground Monday at Pekin Hospital, according to police.

The inmate, 32-year-old Tihawkmena Kamadev, assaulted all three medical personnel as they were trying to treat him following a self-induced fall from a courtroom table.

Kamadev, of Washington, had thrown himself off of the table while his hands were chained to his waist.

He was not injured in the fall, according to police, and the doctor and nurses assaulted did not need medical treatment.

Police said Kamadev had been strapped into a stretcher on the way to the hospital but was unstrapped in a hospital bed after his arrival. There, he sprang up and attacked the emergency room personnel, according to Public Information Officer Don Jolly.

Police arrived shortly after and secured Kamadev in the hospital bed.

He had three new charges of Aggravated Battery when he was later returned to the Tazewell County Justice Center, where he has been since his arrest for allegedly setting fire to his Washington apartment in August.

A judge will decide if Kamadev is mentally fit to stand trial for that case.

According to police, the name the suspect gave is an alias.
