PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria Police are hoping a new initiative called "Don't Shoot" will help curb gun violence in the city.
The "Don't Shoot" program was introduced today in conjunction with the 2nd annual "Riding 4 a Safer Tomorrow" bicycle ride.
About a hundred people participated in the 4-mile ride, which began at the Glen Oak Learning Center and wound through several neighborhoods.
Prior to the ride Peoria police chief Steve Settingsgaard spoke to participants about the new initiative.
"We got it from a book called Don't Shoot by an author named David Kennedy," said Settingsgaard. "Its been tried in several cities and its been successful in cities. They've seen reductions in their gun violence. Its something that we've investigated, the U.S. Attorney's Office brought it to Peoria."
