PEORIA, Ill. -- The Peoria Zoo is mourning the loss of their mother Tiger.

Kyra, 8, died Sunday evening from an unknown illness.

Zoo officials said they treated her with antibiotics several days ago but her health slowly declined.

An necropsy revealed abnormal organ conditions and further testing has been ordered.

Kyra came to Peoria in 2006 and gave birth to four cubs in June 2012.

Zoo Director Yvonne Strode remembered her as a fantastic mother.

"She was perfect from day one. She kept them clean. She kept them safe. She tolerated when they got bigger and would swat her or chase her tail," said Strode. "She was a very tolerant mother, absolutely perfect. You could see her carrying them in her mouth when they got in places she didn't want them to."

Zoo officials are currently in the process of finding a home for some of the tiger cubs.

The zoo plans on keeping two or three of the tigers.
