Peru Police K-9 killed in crash

PERU, Ill. -- A Peru, Illinois police dog is dead following a traffic crash Saturday.

The dog, Kali, was killed after being thrown from a squad car that was rushing to the scene of an armed robbery call.

She is the first Peru K-9 killed in the line of duty.

Her handler, Officer Art Smith, was slightly injured in the crash.

Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said a public open house and celebration of Kali's life would be held this Thursday at the Peru City Hall.
