NORMAL, Ill. -- Unit 5 parents and teachers met the first of three candidates to replace the current superintendent Thursday.

Todd Koehl is currently a superintendent in O'Fallon, Illinois, but he isn't a stranger to Unit 5.

He started his career as a high school English teacher there.

He also served as a high school assistant principal at District 87 in Bloomington.

Koehl said a big factor in this job is building relationships because they keep kids in school and successful.

"We'll continue to communicate with the public and make sure we use every means to do that," Todd Koehl said. "We have lots of social media we can use these days, to make sure the community has every opportunity to see what we are doing. We'll be transparent."

As far as the budget, Koehl says he would monitor it to make sure the district stays within its means but not affect the classroom with any cuts.

Parents have the opportunity to meet with the other candidates on Friday, January 31, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. and Saturday, February 1, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
