PEORIA, Ill. -- Veterans and their families came out to Parkview Cemetery on the day before Memorial Day to remember those who are buried there.

Gerald Peacock of American Legion Post 2 spoke about how Memorial Day got started.

Memorial Day was originally called Declaration Day and was celebrated at different times in different states.

It wasn't until 1967 that the north and the south declared a set date for Memorial Day.

Peacock says the holiday started out small but has since grown.

"Ladies would go put flowers on the graves of their fallen husbands, brothers and so on, and this kind of grew and grew," he said.

Members of the American Legion Post 2 hope on that this Memorial Day, and everyday, people remember all those who have given their lives for this country.
