Many local farmers haven't even begun to plant yet, but the Department of Agriculture says it already knows what farmers are planning on planting.

The USDA's Prospective Planting Report shows that farmers are planning to plant more soybeans then ever before.

A record-breaking 8.5 million acres of the seed are expected to be planted this spring.

That's up 6% from last year.

And Illinois is following that trend.

9.5 million acres of soybeans are expected to be planted this year.

A 1% increase from last year.

But while soybeans are up, corn is down.

Both in Illinois and nation wide, the amount of corn planted is expected to be lower than last year.
