PEORIA, Ill. -- Peorians joined hands around the Peoria County Courthouse on Friday to call for an end to child abuse.

April is Child Abuse Prevention month.

There are currently more than 1,000 pending child abuse and neglect cases in Peoria County.

Organizers hope someday the number of people on hand will surpass the number of children affected by abuse.

"The awareness goes beyond just bringing awareness to agencies or organizations,” said Jeff Campbell, Director of Youth Services for the Children’s Home. “It goes to parents. It goes to the community. The sad thing is there are over 100,000 cases that go unreported each year. We want to make people aware community-wide.”

There was also the mobile parent resource center on hand. It is a renovated bus that serves as a mobile classroom and a resource for early childhood screenings.
