Sen. Mark Kirk back in hospital for surgery

December 9, 2013 Updated Dec 10, 2013 at 10:58 AM CDT

Senator Mark Kirk is back in the hospital recovering from surgery.

The senator had his gallbladder removed after he went to the hospital Saturday morning complaining of stomach pains.

Kirk, who suffered a stroke in January 2012, delivered his first Senate floor speech last month since that health setback.

Doctors said Monday morning's surgery was successful and that they expect him to make a quick recovery.
