PEORIA, Ill. -- Volunteers with the South Side Mission spent Thursday preparing more than 500 pies ahead of the agency's Christmas dinner and meal delivery.

The pies will be included in 1,200 free Christmas meals to be served to the elderly, home-bound and poor in Peoria and surrounding communities.

Organizers said they have the food but encourage those who can to donate their time on Christmas day.

"Call me because we need volunteers to deliver these meals on Christmas morning," said Meg Newell of the South Side Mission. "We are short about 90 volunteers at this point. This is a great family activity, you can get all of the family involved and really celebrate the true meaning of Christmas."
