NORMAL, Ill. -- After seven years, Unit 5 Superintendent Gary Niehaus is finishing up his last days on the job.

Overall Niehaus feels he's leaving the district in a position to be one of the state's leading districts.

Niehaus said his worst moment on the job was when a gun went off in a Normal Community High School classroom in September 2012.

And his biggest challenge was helping the district grow while maintaining a balanced budget -- that wasn't always funded properly by the state.

"I'm not so sure we could duplicate another seven years like that any time in our past or our present or our future," Niehaus said. "And just simply because I was here at the right time, with the right board members, with the right administrative team, to be able to carry out what we carried out...To be able to move this district forward."

His last day on the job is June 28.

Mark Daniels is stepping into the role on July 1.
