Despite the sagging economy, local social service agency is celebrating a successful year of fundraising.
Directors of United Way say their 2010 campaign brought in more than $8.75 million, which exceeds last year's campaign
They say for many of the agencies that partner with United Way, the boost helped fill major budget gaps created by a cut in state funding.
"We knew the need, but sure the fact that so many people know the importance of the programs that are funded and the challenges that they face in keeping those funded and keeping those going made a difference," said Mark Spenny, co-chair for the 2010 campaign.
United Way serves upwards of 1,100 people a day in the central Illinois area.
