PEKIN, Ill. -- It's a road trip to Pekin for Italian beef. Just one of the offerings at what is nominally a Greek restaurant.
The Chicago Hut is a little place in the Market Square Plaza in Pekin. It's been here in the Celestial City for seven years now, getting a reputation for good food and reasonable prices.
One customer said, "Everything's good".
Photographer Larry Foulk and I started with a lemon/chicken/rice soup called Avgolemono. We both liked the taste.
Manager Alex Hilentzaris said it's a family recipe, and for that matter, the restaurant is family owned.
Obviously Greek food is on the menu, and I was tempted by the possibility of a Gyro, but the Italian beef was recommended as well.
I ordered fries with mine; Larry had the Italian beef combo.
The portions...well, large is a good word to start with. It's good, especially served au jus.
I used a fork to get the beef down to a manageable size for a sandwich.
A word about the french fries. They're crisp on the outside, because they're breaded, and soft on the inside. The fries live up to their billing as some of the best around.
Despite the size of the portions, Larry and I both managed to clean our plates.
Our bill, with soft drinks, came to $18.23.
The Chicago Hut is open seven days a week from 10:30 to 9:00, and they do deliver.
