CANTON, Ill. -- This week on You Gotta Eat we check out some southern style barbecue in Fulton County.
JT's Smokehouse in Canton is a Western boy's delight.
The business rode into town about four months ago hoping to fill a void in the area...
"About another 10 miles or so until you can get barbecue so it's real close to home and that's what I like about it,” said customer Chris Hooker.
JT's is actually located inside Canton's Southern Bar and Grille, a honky-tonk style bar that looks like something you'd be more likely to find in Texas.
The barbecue however is more of a Southern Florida style. That's according to owner Jack Griffith.
The restaurant offers burgers and wraps, and barbecue options like smoked meat loaf and ribs but he says what's really selling are the sliced brisket.
"I offer both kinds of brisket, pulled and sliced,” Griffith said. “Homemade tenderloin and our pulled pork are the best sellers."
I saddled up at the bar and, by recommendation from Griffith, went with the ribs, a full rack for me.
I also got some hand cut fries and, for added health benefit, some green beans.
Griffith's ribs had a real nice seasoning to them and I also made sure to slather them in plenty of sauce.
Like any good cowboy knows, a meal not finished is a meal wasted.
JT's smokehouse is located off West Locust Street in Canton.
They open at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday. They close at 8:30 p.m. on the week days, 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 6 p.m. on Sundays.
And you can always work off that meal on the dance floor. The bar is open late on the weekends with live music.
