PEORIA, Ill. -- This week's You Gotta Eat takes us to a restaurant that some say is the first ingredient of a new warehouse district.
When you walk into Sugar Wood Fired Bistro and Gourmet Treats, it doesn't take long to figure out why it's called “Sugar”.
"We have a bakery case of gourmet treats that we do from scratch every day and we have a little bit of sweetness in our sauce that we have as well,” said Restaurant President Travis Mohlenbrink.
Along with Salt and Cracked Pepper, Sugar is the sweet creation of Mohlenbrink
"We kind of theme this idea around the area and as you can see when you look through the space, it's a re-purposed building with re-purposed decor,” he said. “The tables are made out of old wood that we found off of flooring and other spaces and the pallets on the wall came from pallets in the alley. Wood fired pizza; a very rustic style of cooking. We do wood fired wings here, so the whole style and the way we do food and cook here is old and rustic."
Garry and Sandy ordered wood fired chicken wing appetizers and three different pizzas…margarita, chipotle pork and barbecue chicken.
Garry said his chicken was 'kickin' and photographer Chad Weber didn't say anything. He was too busy eating.
Our bill for three people with tip was $57.
Sugar is located at 826 SW Adams in Peoria. It is open Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sugar is closed on Sunday.
