Ameren Illinois has come up with a plan to help its customers save money by reducing their natural gas usage.

In the plan, customers are shown options for cutting energy costs.

Examples include high-efficiency furnaces, programmable thermostats, different types of insulation and better windows.

There will be programs for low-income customers.

Ameren filed the plan with the Illinois Commerce Commission. It is similar to one put in place to help consumers save electricity use.

It hopes the plan will begin in 2009.
