Pekin's MGP Ingredients plant is going to see some 70–to–80 layoffs.
That announcement today from the Atchison, Kansas–based company.
A spokesman for the company said the closing of part of the Pekin plant that produces wheat gluten and wheat starches is part of a "strategic move" on the part of the company.
That closing would affect both union and non–union employees, and would reportedly come later this month.
MGP Ingredients –formerly called Midwest Grain Products –plans on concentrating on the distillery end of the local plant...specifically alcohol for vodka and other liquors.
In late August, MGP reported the company's first net loss in more than 10 years: 11–point–7 million dollars.
