PEORIA, Ill -- Caterpillar has been awarded the Freedom award. It is highest recognition from the Department of Defense to employers who show exceptional support to guard and reserve employees.
Caterpillar spokesperson Bridget Young said they employ about 100 guard and reservists and about 2,500 veterans across the United States. She said they work in almost every Caterpillar area from engineering to skilled technicians.
Recently Caterpillar announced they are investing $100,000 in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes Program.
Caterpillar was nominated for the award by a member of the Marine Corps reserves.
Young said members of the military are a great fit for Caterpillar, "We believe that they have a lot of the values instilled in them through their military careers that we have at Caterpillar too. We think it makes great sense for companies like Caterpillar to hire veterans."
