PEORIA, Ill. -- While some 6,800 employees of Caterpillar will soon be returning to work at Caterpillar's East Peoria campus, 60 employees at its Mapleton plant are being laid off indefinitely.
In a statement, a Caterpillar spokesperson says the layoffs are due to a decreased demand for the products produced at the Mapleton foundry.
"While some measures such as temporary layoffs and shutdowns have already been announced, more permanent measures must be taken in the near-term to align manpower with production," said Caterpillar spokesperson Rachel Potts. "The Mapleton foundry is placing nearly 60 employees on indefinite layoff, the first of which will be effective in early May. We regret the impact to our employees and their families."
The layoffs came just one day before Caterpillar announced that the East Peoria campus will be fully operational Sunday, April 28 for third shift. The company will notify employees if they are expected to report to work before Sunday night.
East Peoria employees can call the Employee Hotline (1-877-336-5569) for further updates.
