PEORIA, Ill. -- The city of Peoria is celebrating an important milestone in the completion of the Caterpillar Visitors Center in downtown.

Workers from Area Erectors attached the last beam Thursday during the topping out ceremony.

Since May, more than 50 construction workers have been assigned to the project.

Peoria Riverfront Museum CEO Jim Richerson says the facility will be another piece to helping redefine Peoria as a city.

"Really this is so much more than buildings, this is about inspiring people to see things in a different way and create things that not only make our community, but the world a better place," Richerson said.

"We will really be able to show off a lot of great things about Caterpillar; technology, history, our global footprint, a lot of things all of our customers, suppliers and dealers like," said Caterpillar CEO and Chairman Doug Oberhelman.

The grand opening of the Visitors Center is scheduled for October 2012.
