As part of National Bicycle Safety Month, The Children’s Hospital of Illinois is teaming up with ThinkFirst, an injury prevention foundation, to give away free bike helmets.
Almost 500,000 kids ages 14 and under visit the hospital every year for Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). The number one cause of TBI's is falling.
The top four causes of TBI are falls, motor vehicle accidents, concussions and assault.
The top ways to prevent TBI's:
- Remove tripping hazards
- Wearing a seat belt every time you drive or ride in a motor vehicle.
- Never driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Wearing a helmet and making sure your children wear helmets.
Kids and teens age 18 and under can get a free helmet at the Peoria Chief’s game on Thursday, May 15.
Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children, teens and young adults. Most of those injuries are preventable.
The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
