Governor Signs Education Bill, But Schools Have To Wait For Money

July 15, 2010 Updated Jan 4, 2008 at 4:21 PM CDT

The governor signed a budget measure today that would mean extra state money for local schools, but educators will have to wait for the cash.

Schools have been waiting for months to get the extra $550 million in state cash that the Legislature passed in November. Governor Rod Blagojevich has approved the measure, but used his amendatory veto power to slightly change the ``budget implementation'' bill.

The measure authorizes spending new state money for schools and other purposes. Now lawmakers must approve his changes or override them before schools get their money.

State Representative Roger Eddy says schools should view the
governor's move as a positive, but can't celebrate until the issue
is finally resolved.
