UPDATED: A former central Illinois reporter and anchor back in the late 1980's who went on to star in Chicago died Thursday in a snowmobiling accident.

WBBM-TV says morning anchor Randy Salerno was killed Thursday
evening while snowmobiling with friends in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

The CBS affiliate says the Emmy-winning reporter began working at the station in 2004. Before that, he spent 11 years at Chicago's WGN-TV as an anchor and reporter.

He worked at both WHOI-TV and then WMBD-TV before leaving for Albany, New York. He made a cameo appearance as a reporter in the 1996 movie Primal Fear starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney and Edward Norton.

In a statement, the CBS station says its thoughts and prayers
are with Salerno's family.

The station also says Salerno will always be remembered for his ability to make people laugh.

Authorities say the vehicle's driver lost control and slammed into trees.

The Vilas County Sheriff says speed and alcohol may have been a factor in last night's accident.

The 45-year-old from Crystal Lake was pronounced dead at the
scene.

Friends and colleagues are remembering Salerno as ``an amazing talent'' whose versatility on-air meant he could cover both political
investigations and lighthearted features.
