NORMAL, Ill. -- Four very humble Bloomington-Normal residents are being honored with the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award.
On Monday, the award winners were announced by the Normal and Bloomington Human Relations Commissions.
The winners of the 'I have a Dream Awards' are Bloomington High School Junior Gautami Galpalli and Normal Community High School junior Akshay Nambiar.
The adult human relations awards go to Quincy Cummings and Michael Donnelly.
Winners are chosen based on their efforts to break down barriers in the community.
Several talked about what it means to live out the values Dr. King showed in his life.
"He lead a selfless life and he always thought about the good of every one else. He put that over himself and I would like to do that someday. I would like to help everyone else as much as I can," said 2013 'I Have a Dream Award' Recipient Gautami Galpalli.
"He saw a need to do more and I want to use my life to do more for people," said 2013 Human Relations Award Recipient Quincy Cummings.
Their awards will be presented January 19th and the 37th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon on the campus of Illinois State University.
Social activist and political commentator Jeff Johnson will be the featured speaker at the event.
The public is invited to attend the luncheon. Tickets are $20 per person and required in advance. If you wish to attend contact Sally Heffernan with the Town of Normal at 309-454-9504 or Ernestine Jackson with the City of Bloomington at 30-434-2468.
