PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police are using the arrest of a known gang member Wednesday night as an example for others.

Martell Perkins, 17, a self-admitted gang member, was arrested just hours after attending the city’s latest “Don’t Shoot” call-in.

Peoria County State’s Attorney Jerry Brady is expected to charge Perkins with unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for allegedly discharging a firearm while riding in a car Wednesday night.

According to Brady, Perkins ignored repeated warnings from law enforcement and city officials that gun violence will not be tolerated in Peoria.

Brady said he will seek a higher bond at Perkin’s impending court appearance.
