PEORIA, Ill. -- Peoria Police are investigating the shooting of a 3-year-old child.

Officials say the boy suffered two gunshot wounds while asleep on a couch.

Police say there was a large party at a home in the 2300 block of West Proctor Street.

They believe that's where the shots were fired shortly after 3:35 Sunday morning.

The child victim was inside a home next door, sleeping on the couch when he was shot.

He is expected to make a full recovery.

The owner of the home was babysitting the victim and his older sister at the time of the shooting.

She wished to remain anonymous, but explains how she reacted.

"I woke up about 3:00 this morning, 3:30, to gunfire. I got the kids on the ground and after the gunfire ceased I realized the little boy had been hit. I put pressure on the wound, called the cops and in about 2 minutes they were here and the paramedics were here and they took him to the hospital. As far as I know he's doing okay," the babysitter of the victim said.

Peoria police officers detained about 20 people who were leaving the party and interviewed witnesses.

They were released and at this time, no arrests have been made.
