If you've already started your spring cleaning now might be the perfect time to go through your medicine cabinet.

But don't throw out those old prescription drugs because the police department in Normal wants them.

The department unveiled a new drop box for twin city residents to leave their unused prescription drugs.

The box is a safer alternative to trashing or flushing pills down the toilet.
This way the prescriptions won't harm the environment.

"We've devised a program that will allow them to come into our lobby and remain anonymous, drop them off in a secure container that we've mounted in our lobby and then we dispose of that properly," said Police Chief Kent Crutcher.

The drugs will be incinerated when the drop box is emptied about every other week.

The Bloomington police and sheriff's departments are also designated drop off points.
