The state budget shortfall is one reason the Jubilee College State Historic Site near Brimfiled is closing until further notice at five o'clock Friday.
A release from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency says it was forced to close the site after one of two full–time staff retired, and that person could not be replaced.
The one remaining staff member will maintain the property and provide security.
The two–story Gothic Revival 1839 building that housed the college chapel, classrooms, dormitory, and small museum will all be closed to the public.
The property was one of the first higher education institutions in Illinois.
