PEORIA, Ill. -- In the Heart of Illinois, people gathered to celebrate veterans on Sunday.

Service men and women were honored for their sacrifice during a ceremony at Springdale Cemetery on Soldier Hill.

Four veterans, who fought in four different wars, took to the podium to speak about their time in service.

Marine Corps Veteran Bruce Brooks says it's important to remember veterans, but also honor the young men and women serving now.

"Today it's harder to serve than it was then. So many people that have iTunes, iPad, iPhone, I can't go, but we have so many young people who will raise their right hand and say 'I solemnly swear, I will uphold and defend, I will bare true faith and allegiance'. That's why we're here today, to thank them for their service and for keeping America free," said Bruce Brown, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran.

After the service the public was invited to stick around to celebrate the 238 birthday of the United States Marine Corps.
