PEORIA, Ill. -- Nearly 100 area children received an early Christmas present Friday courtesy of Payless Shoes.
The kids, who are part of the Skip-a-Long Home Child Care Network, each received a voucher for $20 worth of merchandise inside the Payless store on University courtesy of the Payless Gives program.
Home Child Care Network Coordinator Pam Heimer says organizers worked very hard to make sure the kids had their shoes in time for the holiday.
"These families basically, a lot of them don't have a lot of things. So just getting a new pair of shoes for Christmas is a big thing for them. So this was definitely something we needed to get done before the holidays so we basically kind of booted through it even with the bad weather," said Heimer.
This is the programs third year in Peoria.
Nationally the Payless Gives program will donate $1.5 million worth of shoes to needy children this holiday season.
