CHICAGO, Ill.-- With NBC's Chicago Fire in it's second season producers are bringing another hit to the windy city. The new show is giving one Illinois State University grad his big break.
Fans of Chicago Fire will soon have a new group of heroes to look up to.
The show is bringing in actors from across the globe and launching the career of an Illinois State University grad.
Laroyce Hawkins is Officer Kevin Atwater on the show.
"It's my first time being a regular and I'm loving it. It's a big responsibility and it kind of didn't hit me until we actually started shooting. I was like I have to play someone that people actually care about,” said Hawkins.
The show is from the producer of Law and Order SVU and crews are collaborating to bring your favorite SVU characters to the windy city.
I talked with Kelli Giddish and Ice-T who are guest starring on Chicago PD.
"I mean it's great there's going to be three Dick Wolf shows going on at the same time. We've got SVU, we've got Chicago Fire and we've got Chicago PD and to be a part of that that's really fun to play. It's a world and they created it,” said Giddish.
"Yea we feel very lucky that we were chosen to be the ones to come out here and do it,” said Ice-T.
Although Hawkins had the week off, he stopped by the set to get some tips from Ice-T.
"I was able to watch Ice and Kelli do their thing and they've been doing this for a long time so to be able to sit back and watch and learn from them it was a big motivation," Hawkins said. "He's been doing this character for a long time so one of the things I've learned from him is to try to take what I'm learning now and really try to motivate who my character is later on."
Hawkins said he hopes his success will motivate other ISU acting students.
"I like going back and just letting them know if I can do it anybody can,” said Hawkins.
You can catch Laroyce, Kelli and Ice-T on Chicago PD starting in January.
