July 8, 2014 Updated Jul 8, 2014 at 2:17 PM CDT

PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Police Department is informing the public of a new Facebook and Craigslist scam.

The scam says someone will come to your house and “wrap” your vehicle in an advertisement. The scammers will send a check and ask the victim to cash it, and then ask for him or her to send a portion back via Western Union or Money Gram.

The scammers tell the victim to keep a portion of the money from the check as a payment, but will be informed by their bank later the check was a fake and they are liable for the full amount.

If you receive a solicitation for this scam, cease all contact with the scammer. You can also flag the post and send Craigslist or Facebook details.

If you were defrauded by a local individual, you can call the police. If the scammers were not local, contact the InternetCrimeComplaintCenter at IC3.gov or the Federal Trade Commission at 877-382-4357 or ftc.gov
