PEORIA Ill -- Pat Ferrell is receiving the national Big Brother of the Year Award by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

Four years ago Ferrell was matched with Jarmir Jackson.

At the time Jackson was struggling with school work and attendance at Mark Bills Middle School.

With the help of Ferrell, Jackson is now excelling as a freshman at Quest Charter High School.

Ferrell said he is humbled by the honor, and Jackson couldn't be more proud of his role model.

"There's so many great mentors within the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization that are doing great work with their "littles". I just feel really honored," said Ferrell. "I think it's a testament to the work that Jarmir has put in."

"I think he deserves it because he put in all the time and effort to help me get through the things that I needed to get through and still live a regular life," said Jackson.

Ferrell said Big Brothers Big Sisters is a much needed organization in the Peoria community.

He added that to be a good role model you need consistency and patience.
