A peddle closer to bike safety for kids

PEORIA, Ill. -- People in Peoria are turning over their bikes for a good cause.

The Salvation Army held its annual Bikes for Kids donation event Saturday

People donated bikes of all shapes and sizes for local underprivileged children.

Local bike shops also donated for the cause.

Volunteers examined each bike to make sure they're safe for kids to ride.

Organizers say it's a great way to help kids get some outdoor activity in the summer.

"Try to encourage people to be more involved and if we have an opportunity to play a small part in that by providing a bike, then that's great because we would like to see kids out having fun in the summertime, riding bikes and doing what we know is safe," said Assistant Development Director of Salvation Army Rich Draeger.

Bikes will be distributed to kids next week.

If you'd like for your kid to have one, you can call the Salvation Army in Peoria.
