WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The era of not paying sales taxes on Internet purchases could be over soon.
A bipartisan bill allowing states to collect unpaid online sales taxes was introduced in both the House and Senate.
The Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013 will enable brick-and-mortar retailers to better compete with online sellers that don't charge sales tax, rather than leaving it up to consumers to keep track of and pay their own sales tax.
"There is no reason why states should be denied the authority to require all retailers, all of them, to play by the same set of rules," said Sen. Dick Durbin, (D) Illinois.
Similar bills were introduced in 2011, but were never approved. This time the hope is that with two proposals, it will have a better chance of passing.
