PEORIA, Ill. -- A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday afternoon on the site of what will be the new campus of Peoria Notre Dame High School.

Bishop Daniel Jenky and local leaders were among those on hand for the event.

The land where construction will take place is located off Allen Road, north of Willow Knolls Road.

The first phase of the construction is a $6.4 million sports complex featuring a 1,200 seat football stadium, baseball and softball fields, and facilities for soccer and track.

"We've had to go all around the city, spend a lot of money using other people's facilities and this will allow us to use our own," said Bishop Jenky. "But it's a first step for a whole new campus for Peoria Notre Dame High School."

The new sports complex is expected to open in the fall of 2014. There is no time-table yet for construction of a new Peoria Notre Dame High School..
