BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A Bloomington couple was hospitalized Wednesday after two pit bulls attacked them while they were delivering phone books to residents.

Police say 45-year-old Connie Ijams and 46-year-old Scott Ijams were attacked by the dogs at the apartment building at 1216 Orchard Street.

First responders say their injuries were "very serious". Both victims were taken to OSF St. Joseph Hospital for treatment.

Both dogs were taken into custody by Animal Control.

Bloomington authorities say charges may be determined.

"They are the ones responsible to make sure the animals don't get out of their home. Or even if they do walk out the front door you have to be able to control them. And in this case nobody was there to control their dog," said Bloomington Police Department Public Affairs Officer, David White.

The case is still under investigation.
