BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- After last year's drought, central Illinois communities are now getting back to normal.
Bloomington Water Department officials say the Lake Bloomington Reservoir reserve has now reached healthy levels, as it has added approximately 100 million gallons of water.
Additionally, officials say the Evergreen Lake Reservoir has reached a completely full level, a gain of 200 million gallons of water.
Water Director Craig M. Cummings says the amount of precipitation received last year was comparable to the drought of 1988.
"The situation in 1988 was much more severe because the city didn't have as many tools available to respond to the drought," said Cummings. "Numerous actions have been taken since 1988 to minimize the impact of another severe drought."
Some of those proactive actions, Cummings says, includes groundwater testing, monitoring the Mahomet aquifer, replacing leak-prone water mains, and a water meter change-out program.
"The recovery from this drought has been slow but steady," said Cummings.
The Bloomington Water Department staff will be preparing a request for proposals for a water conservation plan, beginning in summer of 2013.
