PEORIA, Ill. -- Westbound Interstate 74 was closed at the Murray Baker Bridge on Wednesday afternoon after a possibly suicidal man climbed onto the bridge deck.

Police and firefighters responded to the bridge at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a man on the bridge.

After an officer determined the man was on the span, westbound traffic was halted.

For about an hour, officers talked with the man, trying to prevent him from jumping into the Illinois River.

Meanwhile, the fire department's rescue boat was stationed below the bridge.

A firefighter trained in tactical rescue went over the end of the bridge and put a harness on the would-be jumper.

He was pulled back onto the bridge and reportedly taken to Methodist Medical Center for examination.
