PEORIA, Ill. -- Veterans issues was the subject of a roundtable discussion in Peoria on Wednesday.

Illinois 17th District Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D) was a member of a panel that covered subjects ranging from homeless vets to unemployment and back-logged medical claims.

The event was held at Goodwill Commons on East War Memorial Drive.

Bustos says the most common complaint she hears from veterans is about how long it takes them to navigate through the bureaucracy.

"They're filing these claims and most of them are medical claims.
They're claims to get help and, this is not an exaggeration, its not just taking months but in many cases its taking years to process these," said Bustos. "And then in the meantime they're not getting regular updates on the status of them."

According to figures cited during the roundtable there are about 5-hundred homeless veterans in central Illinois.
