PEORIA, Ill. -- Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced Friday a grant of over $4 million for Peoria-area Head Start programs.

The grant is awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“Today’s grant will help children and families in our region get a jumpstart on a quality education and allow our young people to develop the skills they need to excel and be healthy and productive members of our communities," Bustos said.

Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages birth to five by enhancing their cognitive, social and emotional development.
